Biography
A native of Hanover, N.H., John Officer graduated from Boston College in 1979. He served as the head coach of the tennis team at B.U. for two years then began as Men’s Tennis Head Coach at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1984. Officer’s teams won over 450 matches. His seven Patriot League Coach of the Year awards are the most in league history.
As the son of a college professor and a student of Education, John brought a passion for research, learning and discipline to all his work in the pursuit of tennis excellence and the development of character. He wrote a philosophy book entitled Discovering Your Passion: The Path of the Spiritual Warrior. He produced ten videos on the game of tennis. He was prolific in writing articles based on research grants on US tennis, the Warrior Ethos, Spanish tennis, as well as Scottish tennis. Officer authored Advanced Stroke Mechanics explaining a system that incorporates seventy-one different shots to be mastered for an aspiring pro tour player.
John started his own scholarship program taking one student per year offering free lessons and coaching. The first year’s recipient finished his high school career by winning the Maryland State Singles title, defeating the no. 3 player in the country in the finals. He later coached a Johnny O scholarship player to US#2 ranking in the US (18U).
His record of success places him in the category of one of collegiate tennis’ finest educators, coaches and ambassadors. Thirty years of teaching hundreds of midshipmen preparing leaders on the court, for the fleet, and for life, has been the driving force behind John’s inspirational and dedicated service.
