Doug Lamartin

The Voice and Champion of Anne Arundel Grassroots Tennis
Doug Lamartin’s tennis story began 27 years ago when he stepped onto the court to help his three children learn the game. What started as a family activity quickly turned into a lifelong passion for the competitive and social sides of the sport. Over the past two decades, Doug has competed on 37 USTA teams in Anne Arundel County, logging more than 150 matches.
Doug’s impact extends far beyond his own match play. For 20 years, he served as the tennis journalist for the Capital Gazette, authoring biweekly columns that kept local players, parents, and fans informed on everything happening in the county’s tennis community. His coverage only wrapped up when local sports publishing shifted during the pandemic.
In 2014, Doug stepped into the role of President for the Annapolis Area Tennis School (AATS), which delivers public tennis instruction through the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks. Under his leadership, AATS transformed into a financially sound, vibrant organization running over 40 seasonal programs with more than 60 instructors, introducing over 400 junior and adult students to tennis each year. Beyond chairing monthly board meetings and guiding long-term strategy, Doug frequently steps onto the court himself to sub as an instructor whenever needed.
A retired U.S. Navy Commander who continues to work full-time as an engineer for a major defense contractor, Doug has helped shape county tennis from every possible angle: as a player, writer, coach, and executive leader.
