From Marine to Collegiate Legend: 35+ Years of Championship Leadership

Keith Puryear’s leadership journey began in the United States Marine Corps, where he served from 1983 to 1988 before earning his degree at UMBC. That military discipline became the bedrock of an extraordinary 38-year collegiate coaching career, yielding over 780 overall wins, 13 conference titles, and 12 conference Coach of the Year honors across Division I tennis.

At UMBC, Keith spent 19 seasons building both the men’s and women’s programs into regional powerhouses, capturing 11 conference championships and making 10 NCAA Tournament appearances. His impact earned him induction into the UMBC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012.

In 2008, Keith arrived in Annapolis to build the U.S. Naval Academy’s women’s tennis program from scratch as its founding head coach. Across 18 varsity seasons, he has compiled a phenomenal 338-119 record while guiding the Midshipmen to their first Patriot League Championships in 2024 and 2026. Under his leadership, Navy secured its first-ever NCAA tournament match victories, while Keith earned multiple Patriot League and USPTA Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year awards. His 553 career Division I women’s coaching victories place him among the top active coaches in the nation.

Beyond the college courts, Keith has served on the USTA Maryland Board of Directors and competed as a top-ranked Mid-Atlantic player himself. Whether mentoring midshipmen, shaping junior talent, or leading national championship runs, Keith remains one of college tennis’s most respected leaders and educators.
