Steve Newcomer

Thunder on the Court, Leadership on the Bench

Steve Newcomer’s tennis journey began on the courts of Los Angeles, where he learned the game from his father and played high school tennis. After a brief pause during his military service as an Air Force veteran, and later as a nuclear medicine technologist, his passion reignited when his daughter, Diane, took up the sport in high school. What started as father-daughter matches in the NSA Fort Meade league soon turned into a family affair when his wife, Debbie, joined in, launching years of competitive USTA league and tournament play.

As a player, Steve quickly climbed from 3.5 to 4.5 levels, earning a reputation across Maryland as a formidable singles and doubles competitor. With a playing style described as “floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee,” Steve amassed an incredible tournament record over two decades. His trophy case includes titles across the AACTA Tournament, Columbia Tournament, Mid-Atlantic Holiday Tournament, and Bruce Francis Memorial, spanning 3.0 to 4.0 singles and 7.0 to 7.5 doubles and mixed doubles. On one championship team, Steve and his doubles partner earned the moniker “Thunder and Lightning.”

Off the court, Steve proved just as dominant on the bench. Taking on the role of team captain, he captained 26 USTA teams between 2012 and 2025 alone, notably in the competitive 8.0 Men’s and 8.0 Mixed Doubles leagues. Known for attending every match and mastering strategic player pairings, Steve’s squads became widely recognized as “the team to beat.”

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and veteran, Steve stands out as one of Anne Arundel County’s finest players, captains, and teammates.
